Zero Costs and Infinity Returns!
Unfortunately for too many organizations (abusive and toxic ones) that are led by emotionally immature imposter leaders, empathy is treated like a liability rather than a leadership REQUIREMENT.
Sounds too stupid to be true, right?
Unfortunately, those organizations that ignore the basic humanity that we deserve - like empathy, compassion, understanding and care - will face the inevitable consequences of ignoring such a basic, zero cost function of leadership.
What are those consequences?
~Top performers burn out or walk away
~Innovation quietly dies
~Collaboration is stunted
~Psychological safety is nowhere to be found
~Growth comes to a screeching halt
~Silence reigns supreme
These consequences are not because the work was hard, that the employees weren’t capable...oh no. These results are because imposter leaders chose to lead with fear rather than empathy. Their ego leads the way, not humanity.
Sadly, these abusive and toxic organizations will lose their best employees because they very employees who challenge the status-quo, have incredible character, identify risks, are collegial collaborators and drive real progress will be the first ones to edit their resume and start applying for jobs when they feel empathy is absent.
If you’ve been on the receiving end of this kind of leadership, remember this:
Their lack of empathy is not a reflection of your value - not even close. Reject this thoroughly and consistently. Their lack of empathy is a reflection of their ego, their limitations and their total and complete lack of humanity.
Their loss is someone else’s gain and your ultimate win.
